What do you get when you cross a snarky vampire, a feral werewolf, and an Aztec god?
Two years have passed since John the vampire did the impossible and returned from the edge of oblivion, and he didn’t even get a novelty T-shirt for his troubles. You know the ones: “I went to Sheol, and all I got was this stupid shirt”. Now, our “hero”, Warden Broadway, and Ludvig the Hunter are finally ready to carry out their mission of eliminating all warlocks on Earth – which was tasked to them by Hecate herself.
Locke descends into the political nightmare that is the High Council and discovers there is more than meets the eye with the Elders. What could possibly be more important than preventing the apocalypse?!
Depweg takes a much needed vacay in Faerie where he learns to be at peace with the raging monster inside his mind. That is, until his R&R is cut short by new orders that’ll send him into a war zone. Neat!
And most importantly, John continues his quest of replacing his prized collection of Battlefield Earth cups.
Those Wonderful Toys returns to the fast-paced, oftentimes comical style of action that makes John the lovable antihero that he is. Cake and puppies for all.
The cake is a lie, and you can rescue your own Lilith – damn puppy.
If you like Jim Butcher, Shayne Silvers, Cameron O’Connell, Kevin Hearne, Steve McHugh, Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Shannon Mayer, or K. F. Breene, you won’t be able to put down the highly addictive Preternatural Chronicles.

7 books in and still going!. BUT this series has everything and while there is a main character, others are fully developed and maintain my interest. I highly recommend!
I read a lot of paranormal books and rarely review

Some interesting developments
I enjoyed this one overall, and there were some very intriguing elements. I do feel like John gets beat up bad A LOT for someone so powerful, and that is getting a bit old. I didn’t appreciate what happened in chapter 32, but that is a personal thing for me. There was a lot of action and humor, which I enjoyed very much.

nice
HB is definitely coming into his own. His work has gotten more detailed and his characters are now established. Hope Thor makes it back.

Metallic Aroma
Those Wonderful Toys, the 7th book of Hunter Blainâs Preternatural Chronicles, continues the journey of the life of John Cook. Through the series, we have followed him in the most unusual places. No matter where he goes, John is fighting the evil that exists in the universe.John is not your typical hero. He is just trying to save his friends and find his own redemption. As the reader walks in his steps, we experience his struggle of loss, anguish, doubt, conflict and life choices that define him. Blain doesnât gloss over the emotions of that life and is often explicit in the tale. Unlike the typical superhero story, John doesnât always win.Hunter Blainâs unique style may shock our senses with graphic scenes and tickle our funny bone with obscure popular culture references, he has also created a world of various characters that wins our hearts.Blain makes a striking change in his normal style of writing with this book. He uses multiple voices to tell the story. Instead of just seeing the world of Preternatural Chronicles in Johnâs eyes only, we get additional vantage points. It was good to view the world with a broader stroke as well as understand the various charactersâ perspective. Blain does a really good job using this technique. Those Wonderful Toys is another gem in the series; difficult to read at times since it grips your senses but I love what Hunter Blain does in weaving the story. Well done!

Those Wonderful Words! Hunter Blain entertains again!
Yâall. John Cook has returned in Book 7 of The Preternatural Chronicles and WOW does Hunter Blain bring it!Book 7, Those Wonderful Toys, is on a whole other level! Classic John snark and humor and pop culture comments! The movie and book references alone will have you laughing in among the what-the-hell and NO-HE-DIDNâT moments. Nonstop action that bounces through various dimensions as well as different character points-of-view. There are new wereanimals, wizards & warlocks, faeries, gods of various pantheons, angels, demons, and of course, a trying-to-be good versus definitively-evil fight to stave off triggering the end of the world and all humanity. This is one crazy roller-coaster full of humor, deep emotion, and some twisty revelations! If you havenât read novella 3.5, Moonlight Equilibrium, you might (really definitely) want to do that before reading this one.

Another amazing entry!
Ah where to start. This morning I was driving home and got stuck in front of a train passing. As it passed, I was hit with the most terrible force I could’ve been hit with in that moment. Let’s just say Chipotle is even more unforgiving than taco bell. I caused a bunch of cars behind me to wail on their horns as I peeled outta the line to go find the nearest toilet, while pinching my second prettiest cheeks together. Thank Lilith I found a gas station nearby. I ran in and sat down on the John(HeHe) and not a second later filled it. With nothing to do while I did my business, I started reading. I became so engrossed in the picture Hunter so masterfully painted that I ended up spending much more time than I should have and both my legs fell asleep before I realized it. So once I finished my business, and got feeling back in my legs, I set out to finish driving home. I was sorely tempted to pull over and finish multiple times(the book not my uh emergency brown time)! I enjoyed the book far more than I thought I would and can happily say that not only did it live up to the hype, it IS THE HYPE!

Not nearly as enjoyable as the other books in the series
While the main story arc was definitely on the downturn, the previous books had managed to insert way more humor, even around the most brutal points in the story. With this book, it feels like the author is getting series fatigue. I really hope thatâs not the case, and the next book is better, because itâs been a fun series to read until this one.

I loved the new chapter layout with a bit more depth on the side characters and how their stories intertwine with John Could not put this down and final battle was full of action and left new questions that will hopefully be answered in future books.New characters introduce and all the gang back together in this book , another rollercoaster of emotions felt throughout reading, full of movie, book quotes made me laugh plus a shout out to fans of this series . This book will not disappoint on an already additive series .

Amazing as always , on the edge of my seat reading these books , and each book always manages to surpass the last in term of sheer wow factor , buildup, angst and just immersiveness , keep doing what you do and hurry up with the next book!
A Spenser fan –
This series started with real promise but is now becoming formulaic. Seems to be a particular problem with Urban Fantasy : Shayne Silvers, Orlando Sanchez, RL King, Steve McHugh are all excellent writers but, damn, they don’t half spin out a tale. All start out strong and innovative but then change from middle distance to marathon runners where they keep adding plot “twists” to extend the series. I hope HB takes a step back and reconsiders how long this series should last as a literary canon rather than a cash cow.All that said, the series is still worth reading but I find that I’m increasingly skim reading the filler sections of John Cook’s humorous musings, mawkish sentimentalism and bromantic banter to get to the next plot development.Thin ice, Hunter, thin ice …

As a reader of Shayne Silver, Hunter Blain was recommended on my Kindle. I’m always a bit wary of jumping into another urban fantasy/young adult fantasy series (I’m 55) but I’m very pleased I did. Tre heureux, indeed! That’s French for very pleased, BTW.I’m completed hooked on the story arc and it always pays off, not entirely at the conclusion, but enough that your sated but hanging by a fingernail on the cliff edge ender! It’s a guilty pleasure to chuckle with Mr Blain’s characters and roll my eyes in duality with them as well as leak a tear and Brian in frustration but I do enjoy his writing style.I’m a life long disciple of the master Stephen King and in recent years started dipping my toes into this adjacent genre of urban fantasy. It began with Bella Forrest in all honesty, then I discovered Shayne, Robert J Crane, and others and now Hunter!Throughout this series of epic good Vs evil, redemption, forgiveness, love, loss, friendship and more, your emotions do take a wild ride. Please try this series and the writer,I don’t think you’ll be disappointed at alli site haven’t been!

Each book in this series is bigger and more epic than the last. There are some great nods to other authors and other genres all through and laughs all the way.
