Updated February 2023, this sixth book in Nathan Cool’s real estate photography shows techniques, setups, and options for lighting various rooms, interior spaces, and various configurations. With numerous lighting diagrams and example images, you can learn ways to light simple, intermediate, and advanced interior spaces while understanding why certain techniques are preferred over others, and under varying circumstances, so that you can apply these principles to almost any interior space you may encounter. Along with detailed information on popular lighting gear used for interior real estate photography, Nathan discusses various lighting methods in-depth, along with tables for flash power starting points for each example, and how they differ across flash units. This lighting guide builds on techniques in the interiors book in Nathan’s real estate photography series, and this is a great companion guide for his book “Shot Lists” as well. By using professional techniques for interior flash photography you can gain the know-how to tackle almost interior lighting challenge to help you show your clients that you’re not just a consumer with a camera; but instead, you’re a pro.

Great Book That I Wish Was Written Earlier!
As a Real Estate and Architecture Photographer for almost 15 years I have tried a very large majority of techniques, gear and software. Tried every kind of Lightning (or lack there of) from Ambient only with HDR and Exposure Fusion, to Constant Hot and Cool Lights, Strobes, Portable Flashes and Speedlights, etc.I finally settled on the “Flambient” (Flash & Ambient) Technique as very clearly explained by Nathan Cool in his other Books (awesome btw) and as demonstrated in his Videos in those Books and on his Nathan Cool Photo YouTube Channel. In his previous 2 Interior Books he clearly explains and demonstrates his very systematic and detailed approach from start to finish. There is something in them (as well as his other Books for Exteriors, Shot Lists and even the Business side of things) for the advanced photographer as well as the beginner. The most mysterious or difficult side of the “Flambient” part of the process has always been the Lighting with Flash part. What types? What power settings? Where to aim or place them? What modifiers? What exposure and other camera settings? How to post-process them? etc. Normally you just had to practice and test and hone your skills out in the field which is very time consuming and can be extremely frustrating at times.Until Now! His latest book expands upon his 2 previous interior books and focuses on the Lighting with Portable Flashes and inexpensive Speedlights. It answered all of my questions (even ones I didn’t know I had) and also showed me ways on speeding up and improving my workflow and how to solve some issues on location and in post-processing.I only wish it would have came out much sooner. lolAs his new Lighting Guide for RE Photography would have save me many thousands of dollars in gear, tutorials and private consulting as well as hundreds of hours of tutorial videos, reading forums and trial and error experimentation.I have to go back and read it again and take more notes so I can try some of these priceless nuggets of information on my next shoot!Give this book a “Shot”!Thank you Mr. Cool!

These Books Are So Helpful!
I have been photographing real estate for over 2 years. Even though I have improved over time and have a great client base, as an artist, I could never get the results I wanted. I knew how I wanted to light it and how I wanted the end result, but could never get there. Color casts and white balance where my greatest enemy and I would bang my head against my desk trying to get things just right. In December 2019 I had a couple cancellations, which left me with a 4 day weekend so I watched Nathan’s videos on YouTube. After many attempts at flambient I finally felt confident enough to try it on a listing. I was still sort of perplexed on many things so I bought all 6 of his books. This particular book has become a big help to me this past month. I would re-read the lighting diagrams chapter over and over. I learned something new every time. I love having the Kindle version because links to the YouTube videos are there as your read the book. So helpful. At the end of January 2020 I photographed 23 listings from trailers to $500,000 houses, all flambient, and in the last week I started swapping out skies and added fire to fireplaces. I feel like these books “uped” my game. As an artist I am finally getting results I had only hoped to get. I appreciate the agents that choose to work with me and Nathan’s books are helping me make their listings look fabulous. So glad I bought the books.

Great book for real estate photographers – from expert to beginner. I bought the Kindle version.
My real estate photography lighting game has improved 1000% thanks to the lessons covered in this book. I quite honestly was not happy with the results I was getting with my real estate photography lighting setups until I “discovered” Nathan Cool on YouTube. I recommend this book to be an excellent learning resource that compliments and completes the learnings from his video series. The photo included with my review is literally the first photograph I took after reading the book. It’s not perfect, but a huge improvement in my approach.

Nathan cool has forgotten more about photography that Iâll ever know!
Nathan cool has forgotten more about photography that Iâll ever know! Nathanâs books have taught me so much about real estate photography. Iâve always loved the technical aspect of interior photography but never understood the intricacies of lighting, composition and settings to provide proper footage for post processing. I was first introduced to Nathan through his YouTube channel and see him as the definitive source for all things real estate photography. Iâve taken many recommendations From him when purchasing gear and starting my own real estate photography business. Iâve searched for years for someone to just spell it out in a simple and easy to understand way and Nathan has presented the information I needed in an easy to understand format. Iâve reread all six of his books several times now and find something new each time. If you are interested in real estate or architectural photography I would highly recommend any of his books.

Great guide for lighting
What works well is the support In YouTube of the Nathan Cool training videos to expand on the information in the book and to see the training in action.

It’s all about lighting – Must Buy!!
I purchased this book because I own a drone business that provides aerial photos and videos. In the past I purchased one of Nathan’s books called “Photography for Real Estate Exteriors” and that book took my business to the next level. I get a tremendous amount of calls from realtors for their listings and they all ask for interior photos. I wanted to stand out from all the other local interior photographers and I realized that it all comes down to lighting. Once I found out Nathan came out with a lighting guide book I had to get it. In this book, he covers all the equipment and setups for lighting different rooms and how to master interior photography. I highly recommended this book if your a photographer for real estate or looking to get into the field.

I came into this book with no experience of using flash and now feel I have the confidence to be successful at lighting for interior photography. The author explains the process in clear steps with many examples in a friendly and informative style. Check out his other books, YouTube channel, website, and online courses and youâll see what I mean. Iâve not found a better teacher on this fascinating subject and other aspects of real estate photography.

I was looking for a book that was able to show me almost all kind of flashing setups in real estate photography as I was like a lost bird flashing everything, everywhere. This book really showed me how to do so.Not enough to take a star off but really annoying is Nathan promoting his other books. It is really really annoying. You all know he has a lot of books and a great youtube channel but âheyâ enough is enough. Other than that the book is amazing and will definitely teach you a lot of good stuff.
